I completed my Intern 1 (Part-time) and Intern 2 (Full-time) at A.C. Reynolds High School. This is a prestigious school in Western North Carolina with one of the state's best music programs. I was recommended by my instructors at WCU and selected by my Clinical Educator and Host Principal. This experience developed my skills in organization, communication, problem-solving, and more. During my time at Reynolds, I attended several professional development events with my Clinical Educator and met many skilled professionals in Buncombe County.
I have taught middle and high school students individually and in large groups. While teaching privately, I have learned skills in lesson planning, student rapport, scheduling, and problem-solving. Teaching requires the instructor to constantly have new material ready for their students. Staying in touch with popular media, articles, and materials related to music and the flute is essential for the student’s success.
This five-week summer program is geared toward the success and growth of North Carolina’s finest students. My role as an Instrumental Music Fellow consisted of living in the resident halls with students to serve as their mentor and trusted adult while being away from home. My role also consisted of assisting our instructors during class with teaching and logistics. During our free time, we held private lessons for students who desired extra instruction. I had the privilege of teaching woodwinds, brass, and percussion during my time at NCGSE.
The role of a fellow is limited to three summers. I was employed the summers of 2023, 2024, and 2025. Receiving high performance ratings each year and resulted in an invitation back for the upcoming session.
I was offered this role after being contracted to work with SMHS’s marching band a couple of months prior. Being a Director Assistant included performing office and logistical tasks, such as filing, organizing the music library, managing student paperwork, and other spaces at the school. In addition, I led the class when the director was absent, taught private lessons, and gained experience in conflict resolution between students and classroom management.
Out of our nearly 500-member program, I was interviewed and offered this job. I was a non-marching staff member, leading the woodwind caption with a colleague and preparing and executing musical exercises, practicing leadership by leading rehearsals, communicating with our Directors, and facilitating tasks with section leaders. This role enhanced my skills of professionalism, group organization and leadership.
